Harold E. "Bill" Shafer, 71, of Troy, passed away Monday, March 30, 2015, at the Miami County Hospice Inpatient Unit, Troy. He was born May 13, 1943, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, to the late William Harold Shafer and Lorraine Helen (Mattonen) Shafer Giehler.

Harold will be missed and remembered by his wife, Shannon R. (Harshbarger) Shafer of Troy; son William Brian Shafer of Troy; daughter and son-in-law Jennifer Jo & Neil Brinkman of Elida; two grandchildren, Austin and Jasmine Brinkman; and a sister and brother-in-law, Hermene & Roger Maki of Hibbing, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister and brother-in-law, Darlene (Charles) Massingill.

Harold grew up in Minnesota and attended Hibbing schools. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965-67 during the Vietnam War. He was decorated with the Cross of Gallantry from the Vietnamese government for his meritorious service. Harold retired from the Ohio Dept. of Transportation and was a member of Laura Christian Church. He was a past member of the Miami County Radio Club, and enjoyed talking on his CB and Ham Radios.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 3, at Hale-Sarver Family Funeral Home, 284 N. Miami St., West Milton, with Pastor Curt Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Miami Memorial Park, Covington. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Miami County Radio Club, envelopes will be available at the funeral home; or Hospice of Miami County, P.O. Box 502, Troy, OH 45373.
