Harold James Shelly passed away peacefully at his family home at the age of 94 on Saturday July 22, 2017 surrounded by his very close friend Alma Holley and family members. Born in New Orleans on November 25, 1922 to William Harney Shelly and Stella Alexander Shelly, he was well respected and loved by all. Harold attended SJ Peters high school in New Orleans and was an usher at St. Matthias Church for nearly 60 years. He then served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II after which he attended Louisiana State University majoring in Geology and worked for the Chevron Corp for over 25 years before retirement. Local sports was a major part of Harold’s life which began in 1955 at Tulane where worked in the press box with stats and press credentials. He kept stats at LSU for 11 years, handled high school football reports for the Times-Picayune for 5 years and was on the New Orleans Saints stat crew for 22 years. He was also on the stat crew of the New Orleans Buccaneers basketball team and has volunteered his time at 5 Super Bowls, 50 Sugar Bowls, 3 NCAA Final Fours, numerous NCAA basketball regional playoffs and a host of other local sporting events. For his long time dedication, loyalty and generosity he was honored in 2010 by the Allstate Sugar Bowl's Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame with its Jimmy Collins Award and was named an honorary Tulanian in 2014 for over 50 years of dedication to Green Wave football and basketball. Harold was also very active with the New Orleans Boosters All-American Amateur Baseball and traveled with the team to 18 national championship playoffs in Johnstown, PA. In addition he was also involved with American Legion Baseball where he funded teams out of his own pocket for many years, and was an active supporter of Delgado baseball for much of the program's existence. He was also a member of the American Legion for 70 years and served as Boy's State Chairman for Post 307 for over 45 years, sponsoring many a student himself. Over the years he also held the positions of Post Baseball Chairman and School Awards Chairman and served on the Executive Committee and as a Color Guard. Harold was a past recipient of the Legion’s prestigious Louisiana Mike Gehr Blue Cap Award and the Sam LeBlanc Award for outstanding service. He was the American Legion Representative for the De La Salle American Legion baseball teams for many years and received the Brother Ambrose LeBlanc FSC Sports Community Service Award in 2011 along with his maroon De La Salle blazer in which he will be laid to rest. Harold was also a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 606 in Biloxi, MS, a member of the American Camellia Club since 1954 and was with the Mardi Gras Crew of Thoth from 1947 - 1997.



Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 10:00AM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 8:30AM. Interment will take place at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution in Harold's name to a school or organization of your choice.
