Harold William Hughes, age 97, formerly of Daytona Beach, passed away peacefully Monday January 23, 2017 in the loving presence of family. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, he was born November 6, 1919, in Hardeeville, SC, graduated from Mainland High School, served in the United States Navy, worked in the lumber business, and lived on Tarragona Avenue in the Highlands area for over 60 years. Harold was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Bertha (Betz) and son Matthew. He is survived by his daughter Karla Hughes Willman, son C. Daniel Hughes (Deirdre), grandsons James (Jimmy) Willman (Betts), Carleton Hughes (Beth), Christopher Willman (Tammy), and great-grandchildren, Paige, Troy, Parker, Mackenzie, Donovan and Evan, who all knew and loved him as “DeDe.” Harold loved spending time with family and friends, traveling, wood-working and frolicking in the pool with Betz. They were the ultimate evening snackers and gamers, active and well-known in their community and church. Later in life, he enjoyed watching reruns of Gun Smoke and Andy Griffith, was a fan of Ellen DeGeneres, and enjoyed a Jack Daniels (2 ice cubes only) in the evening. College and NFL football were Harold’s favorite sports, followed by baseball. A memorial service will be held for Harold Saturday, February 25, at 2 p.m., at Terrace Oaks Funeral Home, 12690 N. 56th St., Temple Terrace, FL 33617, followed by a celebration of his life at a location to be announced at the service. In lieu of flowers, donations to a Veterans’organization or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
