Heinz P. "Pete" Menger, 75, of Woodburn, passed away on August 24, 2016. Born on November 29, 1940, in Heidelberg, Germany, he was a son of the late Eugen Menger and Kurt and Gertraud (Anderl) Hinz. Pete was the owner/operator of Pete's Machine Works, in Fort Wayne; a member of the Fort Wayne Metals Club, the Woodburn Lions Club, the Maumee Valley Antique Steam Association and the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. Pete immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 and proudly served his country in the Army, serving with the 890th Transportation Company 3rd Platoon.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janice Menger; daughter, Ingrid (Harvey) Smallwood; grandson, Noah Smallwood; brothers, Horst (Bonnie) Hinz and Juergen (Kim) Hinz; niece Angela (Todd) Sult; great-niece and nephew, Samantha and JT Sult; as well as many family in the Walldorf region of Germany.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2 to 5pm, Sunday August 28, at Hockemeyer Funeral Home, 17629 State Road 37, Harlan. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date at North Scipio Cemetery, Harlan. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Woodburn Fire Department or to the Woodburn Christian Children's Home.
