Helen L. Hiatt, 73, of Lincoln, passed away in her home on Tuesday, April 18th, 2017. She was born at Battle Creek, NE, on March 18th, 1944 to Virgil & Alice (Leighton) Hiatt. She started her life on the Rosebud Indian Reservation before moving to Norfolk, NE. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Wayne State College before going on to get her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Nebraska in Omaha. She worked for Omaha Public Schools and UNO. From there, she worked in Multicultural affairs and taught multicultural classes at UNL. She was responsible for helping countless Native American students get scholarships to attend college. After retirement, she was an adjunct teacher for SCC and a substitute for Lincoln Public Schools. She was very passionate about helping Native American students receive an education and worked with Indian Centers in Nebraska to accomplish that. She was President of the National Indian Education Association (NIEA) and the Lincoln Indian Center. Besides being a great educator, she was also a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was the type of person who would do anything for her family and she will be greatly missed. Preceded in death by her parents and brother Virgil. Survived by her son and daughter-in-law Gabriel & Jamie Long Soldier of Lincoln, Grandchildren Cameron & Alice, Brother Fred (Janis) Hiatt of Lincoln, Sister-in-law Joann Hiatt of Lincoln.



Services will be at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home 6800 So. 14th St.
