Helene Marie Rushnak Lowery, 100, of Satellite Beach, Florida, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2017. Helene was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, on June 20, 1916. Helene moved to Brevard County in 1976 from Ridgewood, New Jersey. She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Indiatlantic, Florida. Helene is survived by her daughters, Dale Lowery Swing, Cutler Bay, Florida, and Bernice Lowery, Columbus, Ohio; her son-in-law, Bradford Swing, Cutler Bay, Florida; her granddaughter, Morgan Lowery Swing, Miami, Florida; her grandson, Dalton Lowery Swing, Tampa, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews. Helene was one of nine siblings, all of whom predeceased her.

Helene was a very determined, independent, and active 100-year old who continued to live life as she wanted - living in her own home, paying her bills, driving her new car after passing the required tests and obtaining a new driver's license on her 100th birthday (valid until 2022), acting as the designated driver for friends, shopping at Publix, preparing her favorite healthy meals, visiting and lunching with friends, spending holidays with her grandchildren Morgan and Dalton, keeping in touch with family up north, exercising, keeping house, taking care of her hibiscus, gardenia, and succulent plants, and participating as a devoted parishioner for over 40 years in the many religious events and activities at her Holy Name of Jesus Church community. For more than three decades, she acted as a church greeter for Sunday mass and worked as the cashier at the plant booth for the Church's Annual Festival.

Helene was the widow of Charles M. Lowery to whom she was married for 45 years. They met in 1935 at the wedding of Charles' brother, Walter, to Helene's sister, Anna, where Charles served as the best man and Helene as the maid of honor. Four years later, in 1939, they were married at St. John's Russian Orthodox Church in Bayonne before Charles deployed to the Pacific front during World War II as a member of the United States Marine Corps, 4th Marine Division. After the war, while living in New Jersey, they raised two daughters, Dale and Bernice. Helene worked in a manufacturing plan during World War II to aid the war effort; in addition to being a homemaker, she worked as an administrative assistant, bookkeeper, and service representative before retiring from Weight Watchers in 1976.

After retirement, Charles and Helene moved to Satellite Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed the relaxed retirement provided by the Space Coast. The couple also continued to maintain a strong connection with the Marines. They enjoyed many vacations, for more than 30 years, attending 4th Marine Division reunions all around the country. They also became members of the 4th Marines Florida Chapter and participated in numerous get-togethers with the group. Every year, they especially enjoyed dancing at the Annual November 10th Marine Birthday Ball.

2016 became a Celebration of Life for Helene as she enjoyed five separate birthday events during her 100th birthday month. She was delighted to be recognized at mass by Holy Name of Jesus Church and to have a 100th birthday celebration with her church family. Many of her church and other friends as well as family were in attendance to commemorate her milestone. Her longtime priest, Father David Page, presided at the mass and attended the gathering. She spoke often of her wonderful memories of that day and all her celebrations from the summer of 2016.

Visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 28, 2017, Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 3050 N. Highway A1A, Indiatlantic, Florida.

A Funeral Mass will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will follow at the Chapel of Peace, Florida Memorial Gardens, 5950 South US Highway 1, Rockledge, Florida (at approximately 1:30 p.m.).
