Tarver, Helga E. of Island Estates in Clearwater, Florida, died Friday, July 21, 2017, at Suncoast Hospice at the age of 92. She was born in Bonn, Germany, and came here in 1972. She was a graduate of the University of Bonn, Germany, and La Sorbonne, University of Paris, France. For 12 years she lived in Saigon, Vietnam, where she taught French, German, English, Latin and Greek. While later residing in Frankfurt, Germany, she taught German at the University of Maryland University College Europe.

She was a member of Chapel-by-the-Sea Clearwater Beach Community Church. An enthusiast of the bromeliad plant family for 40 years, she was a long-time member of the Bromeliad Society International, the Florida West Coast Bromeliad Society, the New York Bromeliad Society, and the Caloosahatchee Bromeliad Society. She was passionate about bromeliad taxonomy and hybrid registration and corresponded regularly on these subjects with world-renowned experts. She was honored for her contributions in bromeliad cultivation and identification, including having a bromeliad named for her.

She is predeceased by her husband Colonel Tom Tarver and survived by her niece, Jutta Poggi, in Marseilles, France, and her niece’s two children, Robert and Chantal.

A graveside service will be held at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park, 2860 Sunset Point Rd, Clearwater 33759, at 12 pm on Saturday, July 29. It is requested that memorial contributions be directed in Helga’s name to Suncoast Hospice, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd, Clearwater, FL 33760.
