Hemalata Hemchandra Pandit
"Shyamala H. Pandit"

Shyamala was born in Satara, Maharashtra, India to a barrister, Kashinath Ramchandra Majgaonkar, and his wife, Yamuna.

She went to Pune for college where she earned a BA in mathematics and Sanskrit. She later became a teacher at the Kanya Shala (Girl's School) in Satara. She married Hemchandra Moreshwar Pandit on December 27, 1952. After the birth of their daughters, she encouraged her husband to pursue his PhD in the United States. She single handedly raised her 3 daughters while her husband was away for 5 years before reuniting the family in Buffalo, New York in February 1967. She kept her religion and culture alive in spite of being isolated from the majority of their family. It was important to her that her children understand their culture and traditions. She instilled in them a strong sense of right and wrong, the inclination toward charity, a strong work ethic, the importance of striving for excellence, and her love of sports. She loved art and music. She always had a wide network of friends with whom she kept contact. Later in life she was an avid and regular dominoes and bridge player at the Cary Senior Center where every once in a while she still hit a badminton bird.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. H. M. Pandit.

She is survived by her three daughters, Sarandha, Sumedha and Sucheta and their spouses; two grandchildren, Amogh and Amita; and four siblings in India.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 14, 2017 at 10:00 am at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hindu Society of North Carolina Temple, 309 Aviation Parkway Morrisville, NC 27560.
