Henry attended the Catholic Schools in Thomas until his 8th grade year at which time he quit school to help the family and obtain a job driving a beer truck thru the Whitmer area and around to Baltimore, MD. He frequently boasted how he would ride on top of a milk crate to see out of the truck windshield. Henry was also a former mechanic at the former Milkints Garage in Thomas and then retired as a electrician from Island Creek Coal Company.
He was very proud of his Polish decent and enjoyed his Polka music every Saturday night on television. His favorite polka musician was the famous Frankie Yankovic (born in Davis, WV). His favorite pastimes were spending time with his family, tinkering around with cars in his garage, and he loved to cook. Henry also took pride in his woodworking skills in making handmade toys.
Henry was active as a member of the UMWA #1444, Loyal Order of the Moose #662 out of Keyser, Hendricks Ruritan Committee member, Knights of Columbus of Keyser and Thomas, member of the Tucker County Republican Party, and attended Our Lady of Mercy Church of Parsons.
Henry was featured in Tom Felton's book "Also Known as, Nicknames of Tucker County" in 1996 and was proud of his story to his unique nickname. As quoted in the book "Henry, has been known as "Polecat" for over forty years, he and Bob Milkint, of Milkints Service had been working on a car under the grease rack at the garage in the early 1950's. They were sweeping the floor with a broom. Somehow the grease drippings caught on fire. The Thomas Volunteer Fire Department was called to extinguish the flames. The fire had caused a horrendous odor in the garage. Because of the smell in the garage, Henry was given his well-known moniker."
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Thursday from 5 to 8 PM. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 2 PM.
