Hyla Brodkin Garlen (90) of Clearwater, FL formerly of Summit, NJ passed away peacefully on May 5, 2017 surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, David and her brother Richard. She is survived by her three children: Nancy Leone (Dominick) of Clearwater, FL, Elizabeth Arrison (Frank J.) of Doylestown, PA, and Daniel (Marilyn) of Philadelphia, PA.; six grandchildren: Michael Arrison, Laura Kraucunas, John Leone, Victoria Berg, Alex Garlen, and Amanda Garlen, their spouses and ten great-grandchildren: Maggie, Charlotte, Gregory, Calvin, Graham, Penelope, Amelia, Arden, Julianna, and Miles; a brother Dr. Roger Brodkin (Adele) and four loving nieces and nephews.



Hyla was born September 1, 1926 in Irvington, NJ to Drs. Henry and Eva Brodkin. She earned a BA from Cornell University, a MA from Columbia University and a PhD from Walden University. She worked as a school psychologist for close to 20 years and volunteered for numerous organizations including CASA and The Visual Arts Center of NJ.



After completing her PhD on Children’s Clothing: An Indicator of Social Change in the Concept of Childhood, Hyla was inspired to write a book Another Place, Another Time which transported her six grandchildren into a world of fiction in the 14th century.



Hyla was an avid reader, enjoying most anything she could get her hands on. She was very artistic and her needlepoint was exquisite.



Hyla always believed her life was blessed and we were blessed to have her. She will be missed.



There will be a Celebration of her Life Tuesday May 9, 2017 at 12:00 in Regency Oaks South Grand Lobby Clearwater FL and on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 2:00 pm at The Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation, Springfield Avenue, Summit, NJ



A private inurnment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery.
