Ira Edmund Taylor, age 84, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away November 20, 2016 at Hospice Atlanta care after a brief illness.



He was born in Jacksonville, Florida on December 19, 1931, to Virginia and Dick Taylor. Ira graduated from Hoke Smith High School and attended both Georgia Tech and Georgia State Universities before making the decision to volunteer in the U.S. Army where he operated the communications teletype. After leaving the military, Ira and brother Earl, established, owned and operated Metro Engine Rebuilders for over 50 years.



Ira met and married his beloved wife Shirley Bowen on February 11, 1956, and children Andrea, Alan, Virginia (Gina) and Robert followed.



Ira was a member of the Shriners and had a passion for his family, friends, music, food, cooking, bridge, wine and the beach. All who crossed the threshold of his home were welcomed with open arms and a cocktail. He will be greatly missed.



He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Shirley, daughter Andrea Johnson, son Alan Taylor and wife Janet, daughter Gina and husband Jay, son Robert and fiancée Lori. Ira also leaves the legacy of grandchildren Katie Taylor Mayeux (Chad), Alex Johnson, William Taylor, Taylor Johnson, Andrew Johnson and Leah Brody as well as great grandchildren Lilyana Neal, Nola Mayeux, Calla Mayeux and Scarlett Johnson. Also survived by sisters in law, Pam Taylor, Barbara Hicks, David and Norma Taylor, J.C. Cason, Clyde Taylor and numerous nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.



The family would also like to thank all the caring nurses and physicians at Piedmont Hospital and hospice workers who cared for Ira during his final illness.



Visitation will be at H.M. Patterson & Son – Oglethorpe Hill Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2016. A brief memorial Service will also be held at H.M Patterson & Son - Oglethorpe Hill Chapel on Wednesday, November 23, at 2:30 p.m.
