COLUMBIA - Irene Hood Bacon “Tai Tai” was granted her angel wings on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the age of 86. She was the greatly loved mother of football “Bacon Bowl” sons Robin Bacon, head football coach at Spring Valley High School and former head coach at AC Flora High School, Bill Bacon, former head coach at Dreher High School and current coach at River Bluff High School, and son Bruce Bacon, Vice President of Operations at Fairfield Electric Cooperative.
Irene was born on December 6, 1930 in Glasgow, Scotland. Her professional ice skating career spanned from 1950 to 1960 where she toured Britain, France, and Italy. Her last tour was with the U.S. Army as an ice skater at the U.S. owned Casa Carioca Nightclub in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany where she met her ex-husband, Col. Robert C. Bacon
Always a volunteer, she was a Boy Scout and Webelos Leader at West Point and St. Petersburg, Florida. Irene was a founding member of the Robert Burns Society of Columbia. From 1976-1982 she served on the Fort Jackson School Board and Woman’s Club, the Advisory Board and Athletic Booster Club at Richland Northeast High School, all while managing the Thrift Shop at Fort Jackson. In 1995, Irene served as a delegate to the Governor’s Council on Aging in Myrtle Beach.
Irene’s brothers in Scotland are Harry Hood, former professional soccer player for Celtic Team in Glasgow, Jack Hood, former professional soccer player for Everton Team in Liverpool, England, and George Hood, who all reside in Glasgow.
Irene met royalty in London, England, and as a colonel’s wife, she met President Johnson and President Nixon in Washington, D.C. However, her biggest thrill (next to her nine grandchildren) was when her two boys were head football coaches at Dreher and AC Flora High Schools and played their rivalry game, affectionately called the “Bacon Bowl.”
One Christmas season, while Col. Bacon was in Korea, Irene took a job at J.B. Whites in the children’s department to keep busy and ended up staying 25 years at White’s and Belk’s as a sales specialist. During that time, she earned six plaques for service and the love of thousands of young mothers who needed assistance in outfitting their small children.
“Tai Tai” will be missed, most importantly of all, for her unconditional love and sacrifice for all the members of her family. She could always be seen and heard at those games, performances, pageants, and school event that she loved to attend.
Irene is survived by her sons, Robin (Marcia), Bruce (Suzanne), and Bill (Trisha); brothers, Harry, Jack and George Hood; the greatest joys in her life: her nine beloved grandchildren, Savannah, Coleman, Tori, Linnea, RJ, Sierra, Katie, Saylor, and Kyle. She was preceded in death by her brother, Peter Hood of Glasgow and sister, Pat Wagner from Missoula, Montana.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2017 at Dunbar Funeral Home, 3926. Devine Street, Columbia, SC. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, conducted by Monsignor Richard D. Harris of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Serenity Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3600 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205.
