Sister Irene Huber, RSM, died peacefully Thursday, April 27, 2017 at St. Bernardine Home in Fremont, Ohio. She was 88 years old and a Sister of Mercy for 70 years.

Sister Irene was born to Walter and Helen (O'Toole) Huber in Toledo, OH on May 8, 1928. She was one of 9 siblings; 5 girls and 4 boys.

Irene entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy on September 7, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her first vows were made in Cincinnati on March 12, 1949, and final vows in 1952. Sister held a Bachelor's of Education degree from the Athenaeum in Cincinnati, and a Master's in Art from Notre Dame University. She shared life as a Sister of Mercy with her sister Helen, who entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1942.

Sister Irene's life ministry and service was in the area of education. She taught elementary grades in Cincinnati, at St. Catherine's in Toledo, St. Mary's in Mansfield and at St. Mary's in Kirby, where she was also the Principal.

Following her graduation from Notre Dame University she taught art for the remainder of her life. She began at Central Catholic in Toledo. Later she moved to Jamaica WI where she taught at Alpha Academy in Kingston Jamaica. Both Sister Helen and Sister Irene loved their ministry in the warm climate of Jamaica.

Upon returning to the states, Sister Irene taught art for many years at Daytona Beach Community College and later at the Center for Seniors in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
She had a trunk full of art supplies as she traveled to various classes. Sister Irene firmly believed everyone could do art and she enjoyed her continuing education classes with the senior citizens, challenging them to use their creativity.

Sister Irene moved to Fremont in 2008 and became a part of the prayer ministry with the other sisters. Her infectious, joyful spirit and willingness to try something new will be missed.

Sister Irene is survived by the members of her religious community the Sisters of Mercy, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents,
her sisters; Florence, Sister Helen, Catherine Walton, Jeanne Borer and brothers; James, David, Edward, and Walter.

Visitation will be Monday, May 1, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 7:30 pm at St. Bernardine Home, and again on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 until the funeral. Funeral services will be begin Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 4:00 pm in St. Bernardine's chapel. Burial will follow in Our Lady of The Pines cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sisters of Mercy St. Bernardine Home.
