Irwin R. Sanders passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on June 29, 2017 at the age of 86 years following a brief battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Virgets Sanders ; his parents, Fred and Mae Sanders; and his brother, Joe Sanders. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Gross Buddendorff Sanders; his beautiful children, Gina and Scott Sanders and Renee Borne; his sister, Linda Lee Mears(Raymond), and brother, Fred(Cheryl). He is also survived by his stepchildren: Dr. Ken Buddendorff(Kris), Jim Buddendorff(Ann),Denise B. Fink(Mark), Charlene B. Bilbe(David), and Dr. Chris Buddendorff(Nicole). “Bear” was blessed with eleven grandchildren,: Julia, Ben, Lauren, Jason, Austin, Blake, Evan, Cameron, and Brett Buddendorff, and Caroline and James Bilbe. He was also survived by a host of nieces and nephews and friends he thought of as family. Irwin was born on February 4, 1931. He attended John Diebert elementary school, Warren Easton high school, Louisiana State University as an undergraduate where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, and Loyola School of Law to earn his Juris Doctorate. He served and was honorably discharged from the United States Army following the Korean War. He was a member of the American Bar Association, President of the Criminal Courts Bar Association, President of the Jefferson Bar Association, Founding attorney for the Patrolmans Association of New Orleans(PANO), President of the East Jefferson General Hospital Foundation, President of the Airline Lions Club, District 8S Governor of the Louisiana Lions Club, and longtime member of St. Angela Merici Parish.



Irwin was known for his selflessness, thoughtfulness, generosity, and witty nature. He will be missed by all who knew him, but lives on in the hearts of all whose lives he touched.



Relatives and friends are invited to attend his services Friday, July 7, 2017 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am, followed by a Mass at 1:00pm. An interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Irwin’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, LSU Tiger Eye Foundation, Shriner’s Hospital or the LASPCA.
