Italy A. Ashley, 90, died on August 13, 2015, in South Charleston, West Virginia



He is survived by his daughter, Tammy Marinelli, of South Charleston; and his grandchild Peter Paul Demarie III, and two great grandchildren, Bethany Hope Demarie and Peter Paul Demarie brothers, Walter and Edward Ashley, and brother-in-law, Julian Sabongan.





He is preceded in death by his wife, Gwen Frances Harrell Ashley; son, Richard D. Ashley; brothers, Joseph, Earl, Herman and George Ashley; sister, Ruth Sabongan.





He was born on June 16, 1925 in Itmann, West Virginia to the late Joseph and Elizabeth Aillia Ashley. He graduated from Mullins High School and Morris Harvey College. Italy was a veteran from the “greatest generation” serving in the United States Army in World War II. He retired from Union Carbide and was the former owner of Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Charleston.





Italy was a social and active man who was a 50 year member of Dunbar Masonic Lodge #159 and was also a 50 year member of the Scottish Rite of Charleston, West Virginia. He was a member of the Beni Kedem Legion of Honor, Shrine Patrol, Chef’s Club, and VIP Room. Italy enjoyed people and life. He was a generous and thoughtful man. He walked around with a smile on his face and always humming a tune.





A Funeral Service to Honor the Life of Mr. Italy A. Ashley will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at Bartlett Burdette Cox Funeral Home with H.R. Whittington as Celebrant. Visitation will be held from 11 to 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston with Masonic Rites by the Dunbar Lodge #159, and Military Rites.





In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made to the Beni Kedem Shrine Transportation Fund, in memory of Italy Ashley, as he often volunteered his time to transport children and their families to the Shrine Hospital in Lexington, KY and Cincinnati, OH for appointments
