COLUMBIA - Dr. Jack Dillard Ashley died Saturday, January 28, 2017. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Charlotte, Tennessee. He was born in Charlotte and had been a longtime resident of Columbia.
He received his bachelor’s degree from David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tennessee and his master’s and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University, Nashville. He taught at Troy State College in Troy, Alabama before joining the English Department at the University of South Carolina in 1962 and retired in 1994 as Distinguished Professor Emeritus but continued as adjunct professor and also taught courses at the Capital Senior Center for a period of time.
Dr. Ashley was a Shakespeare, Milton, and Flannery O’Connor scholar and also a knowledgeable plant person. He inspired many with his love of literature, music, theatre, and gardening, his joie de vivre, his experiences from his travels at home and abroad and his appreciation of all fine things.
He is survived by his brother, Harry Huff of Apon, Tennessee; cousins, Linda Dillard Hook (Jimmy) of Columbia, Nancy Frey Dillard of Huntsville, Alabama; many cousins in Tennessee; the entire McCravy family, his second family, of Columbia; special friend James Young of Columbia; and Goldie, his devoted pet.
The family thanks all the caregivers for the special care and love they gave Jack.
