Jackie (Jack) Ray Clay passed away at home, at the age of 81 on August 8, 2017, with his wife by his side. Jack was born September 20, 1035, in Christopher, KY, to parents Arlie and Alpha Clay. They moved to Charleston, WV, in 1938. He attended South Charleston High School, class of 1955, which has the most amazing alumni group, keeping in touch with each other for 62 years. He joined the Navy in 1955, and proudly served aboard the USS America during the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Navy in 1974, he worked for the Dept. of Defense at NARF and then at the Fleet Industrial Supply Center at NAS Pensacola, retiring again in 1997.
Jack earned a Bachelor's Degree from Troy University in 1984. He was a devoted Classic car buff, restoring numerous cars over the years. He was an avid West Virginia Mountaineer fan, a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 22 for 49 years, and a member of the National Rifle Association.
Jack is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jo Ann (Scott), his daughter, Karen Tyrrell (husband Steven) of Pensacola, and son, Edward Clay of West Virginia. He was preceded by his mother and father (Alpha and Arlie), sister (Wanda), brother (Eddie), and daughter (Patty).
Graveside services will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 10:30 am at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors and Fleet Reserve Association Branch 22 services. Attendees are requested to meet at Oak Lawn Funeral Home by 9:15 am for escort. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
