James "Jim" Abbott, 95, of Albany passed away Sunday at his Albany home. He was born in Los Angeles to James Edwin and Zelma (Garshwiler) Abbott on July 20, 1916. Jim received his early education in the Los Angeles area, later working with the aerospace industry. At the start of WWII he enlisted in the Coast Guard. He went through boot camp in California, was transferred to Seattle, and eventually to Ketchikan, Alaska where he was a draftsman for the Twelfth Naval District. During his stay in Ketchikan he met Kathryn Andersen, a teacher in the high school, who later became his wife. Upon being discharged from the Coast Guard at war's end, his choice of career was in the teaching field. He entered the University of Northern Colorado earning a Bachelor and Masters Degree in education. He taught in the California and Oregon school systems, including Calapooia Middle School & South Albany High School. His teaching years were interspersed by positions in the aerospace industry working with North American Aviation, Inc. with the B-70 aircraft project, the Saturn II program and the Apollo project in the Engineering Division. In 1968 he moved his family to Albany where he returned to teaching. Upon retiring, he attended Biola University in Whittier California in order to fulfill his dream of studying in the religious field. After pursuing his dream, he returned to Albany. Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years, son Gary and wife Barbara of Chelan, WA, and daughter Carole Schuler of Medford; Granddaughters Katie Schuler of Olympia, WA, and Emily Beamer and husband David of WallaWalla. A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at his home from 1-3pm on Sunday May 6th. Jim's cremated remains will be scattered at sea by the US Coast Guard.
