James Claude Stephens, 89 passed away on March 8, 2017 at Northstar Place Assisted Living after a long illness. He was born on December 16, 1927 to Sherman Oscar Stephens and Ledie Haggard Stephens. He was the next to youngest of six boys who farmed in the Appalachian Mountains around LaFollette, Tennessee. He graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1951 where he met his wife of 65 years, Rosemary Mitchell. He immediately worked for Lockheed Marietta, where he remained until his retirement in 1986. He had seven patents awarded to Lockheed for his achievements during that time, especially in the area of robotics.
He was a member of the Cobb County Symphony violin section for over thirty years and played at a number of churches in the area, including Kennesaw First Baptist , Mountain Paran North, Bascomb United Methodist, and Congregation Beth Hallel. He and his family were instrumental in founding North Cobb Christian School.
Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife, Rosemary Mitchell Stephens; three children, Victoria Stephens Kemp (Perry), James Mitchell Stephens (Elaine), and Eydie Stephens Carmichael (Toby); six grandchildren, Hallie Roberts, Missy Robinson, Alana Saporiti, Susanna Stephens, Rachel Carmichael, and Grant Carmichael; one great-granddaughter, Caroline Roberts; one brother, Robert Stephens of Brandon, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be at WInkenhofer Pine Ridge Chapel in Kennesaw on Tuesday, March 14 at 12 noon with the Reverend Steve Alred officiating. Interment with honors will be at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia at 2pm. Family will receive guests at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10:30a-12:00 noon.
