James Murray Higgins, Sr., 77, of Charlottesville, VA passed away on July 23, 2017, in the presence of his family, at the Hospice House. He was born on July 16, 1940 in North Wilkesboro, NC, the youngest son of the late Charles Bryan Higgins, Sr. and Vera Kirkman Higgins.



Jim grew up in Monroe, VA. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he worked in the printing industry for over four decades starting with the Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation. In 1991, he joined the University of Virginia Printing & Copying Services as the customer services manager. One of his first customers became his best friend and in 1993 his wife. After retiring from the University in 2009, he worked part-time at Trader Joe’s and RMC Events in between his golf games. He was a member of Crozet Baptist Church where he sang in the choir for several years.



He is survived by his wife, Pamela Woodie Higgins, of Charlottesville; his oldest son Lt. Commander James “Jay” Murray Higgins, Jr. and his wife, Cheri, and their children, Alek and Kyra of Virginia Beach, VA; his youngest son, Patrick Thaxton Higgins, and his wife, Melody, and their children, Madison, Gillian, and Olivia of Catonsville, MD; his brother, Charles Bryan Higgins, Jr., and his wife, Brenda, of Rockville, VA; his sister, Nancy Higgins Moye, and her husband, James, of Midlothian, VA; and a number of cousins, nieces, and nephews.



The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Ryan Gentzler; the staff at the Emily Couric Cancer Center; Dr. Andrew Macfarlan; Kelly Ottman, his nurse with the Hospice of the Piedmont; and his caregivers at the Hospice House during these last few weeks. The family also wishes to thank their colleagues at the University of Virginia and their many caring friends and neighbors for the delicious meals provided during the last few months.



A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Crozet Baptist Church with Reverend David Collyer officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 28, 2017 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the church.
