James R. Howell 85, of North Shore Road, Spofford, NH, passed away at his home on Saturday, February 18, 2017.

He was born in West Chesterfield, NH on November 2, 1931, the son of Richard and Myrtle (Farr) Howell.

He grew up in West Chesterfield and was a 1951 graduate of Brattleboro (VT) High School. While in high school, he was a member of the school's football team.

Following high school, Jim joined the Navy where he served for from September, 1951 until September, 1959, during the Korean War. He was a longtime member of the Brattleboro American Legion Post #5.

Following his military obligations, Jim went to work with New England Telephone Company. He worked in many areas with the company, starting as an installer and later as special services technician. He retired from the company after working with them for over thirty years.

Jim loved to work in his floral and vegetable gardens. His skilled hands and mind-craft found Jim also enjoying woodworking and creating wonderful pieces of artwork. He was most proud of his 1955 Chevy and his antique truck that he collected.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 59 years, Barbara L. (Wilder) Howell of Spofford; his three children, Diana L. Blouin of Keene, NH, James R. Howell, II, of Spofford, Jeffrey S. Howell of Winchester, NH; seven grandchildren, Amie L. Serpico and her husband, Chad, Amanda L Crocker and her husband, Josh, Allison L. Blouin, Corey S. Howell and his wife, Emily, Nicole E. Howell, Kali P. Howell, Kirby J. Howell; four great-grandchildren, Alexus J. Crocker, Gavyn S. Howell, Lyla J. Howell, Lyla A. Serpico; four sisters, Beverly Cleveland of Brattleboro, Beulah Reardon of Brattleboro, Mabel Blodgett of Hinsdale, NH, Joanne Abel of Springfield, MA; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara McLaughlin, and three brothers, Harold Lane, Norris Lane and Clayton Lane.

Family and friends are invited to call on Friday, February 24, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene. Private burial with military honors will be held in the spring in the Chesterfield West Cemetery, West Chesterfield.
