James Thomas Rawls, Sr., 89, passed into the presence of his Lord on Sunday, July 2, 2017, in Greenville, South Carolina following a brief illness. Jim is survived by his loving wife Johnnie Patrick Rawls, his sons Tom Rawls, Dan Rawls, daughter-in-law Rachel Hammon Rawls, grand-daughter Elizabeth Rawls and daughter Susan Rawls. He was preceded in death by his niece Ruth-Anne Peck, sister-in-law June Rawls and brother Eugene Barney Rawls, Jr.

Jim was born on April 14, 1928 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Eugene Barney Rawls, Sr. and Iva Belle Seay Rawls. He graduated from Dreher High School and studied art at the University of South Carolina. Jim was a photographer, commercial artist, and fine artist. He continued an artistic career while in the United States Navy Reserve. In the private sector, he worked for Rushin-Pearson as Art Director for 14 years doing package design for such companies as Hollingsworth/Nunnally Candy Co., Coca-Cola, Frito-Lay and Bunyan Potting Soil. In his later years he returned to his love of fine art and was featured in American Artist Magazine.

In his late teens Jim accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior. Jim served the Lord and the Lord’s people as an elder at Bethany Bible Chapel in Columbia, Northwoods Bible Chapel and North Atlanta Bible Chapel in Atlanta. He pastored, preached and taught God’s Word at each of the meetings where he fellowshipped. Jim had a deep love of studying God’s Word and he served his Savior faithfully.

Jim and his devoted wife Johnnie met at a bible study in Columbia South Carolina. They were married on November 6, 1953 and remained faithfully and lovingly devoted to one another for 63 years. The last 2 years of his life, Jim fellowshipped at Overbrook Gospel Chapel in Greenville, South Carolina.

His wife and children remember Jim as a perfect Southern gentleman, but far more importantly as a man of God, devoted to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jim and Johnnie faithfully served the Lord by opening their home to visiting pastors, preachers and fellow servants of the Lord. Jim touched the lives of all who knew him and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at 9:30am at Overbrook Gospel Chapel with a memorial service following at 10am.
