James "Jim" William Whetston, 82, of Cary, passed away on October 13, 2017 after a 6 year battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on December 8, 1934 to the late William Walter Whetston and Mary Laura (O'Connor) Whetston in Morton, Minnesota.

Jim began his communications career in the Army on active duty where he received his initial training. He put his military time on hold while working in the telecommunications field for General Electric, ITT and Nortel. He eventually achieved his 20-year military retirement after moving to North Carolina.

Jim was devoted to his family and his Catholic faith. He had extraordinary talent for building or repairing anything mechanical, electronic or otherwise. In fact his nickname was "Mr. Fix It". Not only did he do this in his home but he also spent many hours volunteering at his church helping with the audio system. He even devoted many hours to the Cary High School Marching Band, some of them after being proudly volunteered by his daughter Karen. When the family moved to North Carolina, Jim built an entire wall of kitchen cabinets in the house before moving in. The garage was full of many types of tools and he spent many happy hours there tinkering and creating. You name it, he could build it or repair it. He was a very generous man who was always willing to help when there was a need and he gave time to his church in many capacities. He had a feisty Irish spirit and dry sense of humor which he maintained until the very end of his life.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William Walter Whetston and Mary Laura (O'Conner) Whetston, his wife Nancy Jo (Finch) Whetston, brothers Vince Whetston and Bud Whetston, and sisters Charlotte (Whetston) Christenson and Margaret (Whetston) Latcham.

He is lovingly remembered by his family: daughter Karen (Whetston) Hite and family of Raleigh; son Mike Whetston and family of Fredricksburg, VA; grandson Adam Whetston of Simpsonville, SC; brother Francis Whetston of Lake Lillian, MN; sister Gertie (Whetston) Holzerland of Stewartville, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 11:00 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Apex. A visitation will begin at the church prior to the service at 10:00.
