Jane Powell Fesler February 17, 1924 - November 17, 2017

Jane Fesler died peacefully early in the morning of November 17, 2017 with her son Tom at her side. She had suffered a sudden massive stroke the previous morning and did not regain consciousness.
Jane was born Dorothy Jane Powell in 1924 to James Malcolm and Evadine Powell in Mishawaka, Indiana. She grew up there with her younger brother James, graduating from Mishawaka High in 1942. Jane attended UK in Louisville, KY, until she had to move back home during her mother's fatal illness.
Jane and Robert Francis Swadener married in 1945 and had 5 children, Rachel Ann (John D. Lathrop), Michael Andrew (deceased, Peg), Patrick Joseph, Thomas Powell (Terry) and Daniel Robert (Beth) and began to live the Midwest Small Town life. The family attended St. Monica's Church and School in Mishawaka.

Into the responsibilities of home, church and school, Jane added arts and crafts, painting and French classes, music of all kinds, interior design, gardening, study of birds and wildlife, making "pets" out of very large ants and beetles, sewing and embroidery, cooking, and a love of books.
Almost 20 years later, Jane and Bob divorced and her 4 teenage boys lived with her while she helped them to graduate from Mishawaka High school. To her great joy, her first two granddaughters were born during this time.
After a few years, Jane decided that she would like to date again and attended a Parents Without Partners dance where she met Robert (Bob!) Fesler, and he fell for her right away. Jane always liked a cocktail and dancing, or dinner and a movie, so Bob asked her out on the days that the PWP had their dances so she wouldn't meet anyone else. It worked and they were married in June of 1968. "The times were changing" and Bob and Jane began their 30 year great adventure.

Jane and Bob Fesler moved to Florida a few years later to be close to her Dad, then moved to Mesa, AZ for the warm weather and to be close to her son Tom and his family. When Bob retired they fitted out a Toyota van as a camper and proceeded to drive all over the country, exploring and visiting their many friends and relatives, while making Mesa their home base. They loved Arizona .
Jane was a beautiful person inside and out who was loving and generous to everyone. She kept up a correspondence with family and old friends and new for as long as she could, sending cards for every occasion. She was very devout and spiritual Christian, a member of the People of Praise, and attended Mass regularly at various Episcopal or Lutheran congregations. She and Bob volunteered all the time they could, at whichever parish they joined. They also loved ushering for concerts and other performances in the Phoenix area.

Once somebody joined her family, Jane didn't let them go if she could help it. She was the loving Mom or Grandma to a wide family of step children, exes and close friends. Jane kept up with the events of the day, reading a wide range of books and magazines, with the Sunday New York Times as the highlight of the week till the end of her life.

After Bob died, Jane continued to travel and make more friends. Her son Daniel and family had moved to Mesa by then and she was included in their busy life. Her birthday and Christmas were the big family celebrations of her close family. Jane lived her last few years at the Courtyard Tower in Mesa, overlooking the mountains from her 9th floor corner apartment, lovingly cared for by the staff who became her friends too. She leaves a big hole in our hearts.
Jane is survived by 4 children, 3 step-children, 9 grand-children, 2 great grand-children and 4 great, great grand- children.
