Janet E. Monterosso, eighty, of Pittsfield, passed away peacefully at Mt. Greylock Nursing Home on
Wednesday, March 25, 2015. She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Tierney and Sally LeBarron, son-in-law Thomas Tierney, and grandchildren Sarah and Ben Tierney, her sister-in-law Doris Roberson and nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her step-children Florence Keefener and Theresa, Tony, Joey and William Monterosso. She was predeceased by her first husband, Howard Roberson, her second husband, Frank Monterosso, her brother Edwin Lewis and sister-in law Dottie Lewis.
Janet, daughter of Edwin and Ruby Lewis, was born on February 24, 1935 in South Hadley Falls, and moved to Pittsfield with her family when she was nine. She graduated from Pittsfield High School's class of 1953, and received her bachelors of arts in education from The University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She then taught elementary school in the Pittsfield Public School system, and married Howard Roberson in 1960. In the eighties she changed careers and worked for many years for BCARC. Both careers she enjoyed thoroughly, giving her gifts, talents, encouragement and compassion to. After she retired she volunteered for the RSVP program where she tutored children.
Janet was a lover of music and the arts. She was a member of South Congregational Church from the age of nine, and sang in the choir there, where she met Howard. She was also a member of the Berkshire Lyric Chorus and The Hilltown Singers. With both Howard and Frank she enjoyed ballroom dancing, and was a member of the Votre Soiree. She loved plays, musicals, ballets, and enjoyed playing the piano. She passes along her love of music to her children and family. She also loved nature, flowers, birds, reading, and good stories.
Janet was an encourager. She wanted everyone to be able to develop their talents, whatever they may be, and was a light to many, particularly in the teaching of language and communication. Her many friends over the years would all agree that Janet had an unblemished heart, would always give a person the benefit of the doubt, and was always the last to condemn or point fingers. Losing Howard was a severe blow, but in finding new love with Frank she also found a new and loving family to add to the joy she was able to bring.
A severe stroke in March of 2011 brought her to Mt. Greylock nursing home. The loving staff there took excellent care of her. We are thankful that she is no longer in pain or suffering, and is with God, her family and friends. We will feel her presence for years to come.
