Janet Maxine Conciatore of Old Saybrook died peacefully at her home on May 2, 2016, surrounded by her family. She had heroically endured a 6-month struggle with pancreatic cancer.

Janet was born on July 16, 1935, in Danbury, the daughter of Henry and Bessie Helmar. She is survived by her husband, Joe; son Joe, Jr., his wife Lisa, and their son Patrick, all of Bethel, CT; her daughter Jackie Senter of Fairfax, VA and Jackie's husband Clarence; her brother Henry Helmar, Jr., of Alamogordo, NM; sister Jackie Jowdy of Danbury and many nieces and nephews.

Janet earned her Masters Degree from Columbia University in NYC and completed postgrad work at New York University and Smith College. She worked for 30 years as a dedicated and gifted individual and family therapist.

Janet was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a gifted homemaker and talented gardener. She enjoyed traveling, kayaking, computer games, books and theater. She loved the Shoreline, and often spent her afternoons at the beach. She took classes at the Mercy Center, belonged to Madison Arts Cinema Sunday movie club, and played Mahjong at the Senior Center. She also worked for a year as a volunteer in prison ministry.

Calling hours will be held on Friday May 6 from 9am-10:30am at Swan Funeral Home in Old Saybrook. A funeral service will follow at 11 am at St. John's Catholic Church in Old Saybrook. Burial will follow at The CT Veterans Cemetery, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support the Middlesex Hospital Hospice/Palliative Care Center.
