Mrs. Janie Upchurch McGarity, age 99 of McDonough, Georgia, passed away November 17, 2017. She was born in McDonough, Georgia, to the late Arthur Jefferson Upchurch, Sr. and Nora Lee Bowden Upchurch. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Florence Quinton McGarity, a grandson, Steve McGarity and by seven siblings, Pebble, Ralph, baby Grady, Grace, Orion, Frances, and Faye.

She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church for 87 years. She liked to say she came to Bethany before she was born, since her family worshiped there since its inception in 1858. She retired from the Henry County Board of Education in 1987. She served on the Henry County Council on Aging from 1987-2016, previously on the Council on Aging for McIntosh Trail, and was a founding member of the City of McDonough Silver Sixties. She supported and “walked” in the Miles for Meals Walk until age 97! She loved her many activities and friends at the Heritage Center. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She was a loving, generous true Southern Belle who, with a twinkle in her eye, always had a Henry County or family story to tell. She enjoyed cooking, ceramics and crocheting and shared the fruits of her talents with all. A quote from a great-granddaughter speaks for all she knew and loved: “Your love, support, and encouragement are priceless.”

Survivors include her son, Bobby Dan and Dena McGarity of Oneida, TN; daughter, Judy and Bob Gilbert of McDonough; grandchildren, Deb McGarity of Fayetteville, Mark McGarity of Portland, Maine, Rob and Denise Gilbert of McDonough and Johnna Biles of McDonough; step-grandchildren Sam and Darcie Litton and Tina Litton-McGarity; great grandchildren, Kelsey McGarity, Bobby and Tracy Gilbert, Sophia McGarity, Jessie Gilbert, Abigail Biles, Shelby Biles, and John Biles; step-great-grandchild, Joey Strunk; and three great-great grandchildren, Liam, Molly and Adelaide. She is survived by her brother, A. J. Upchurch, Jr., and many, many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 22, 2017 – 11:00 AM at Bethany Baptist Church. Pastor Al O’Quinn will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit the family Tuesday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Those who wish are encouraged to make contributions to Bethany Baptist Church in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are under the direction of Haisten Funeral Home of McDonough, www.haistenfunerals.com.
