Jean Irish Loftus, 93, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2017, at Village House in Lee’s Summit, MO. She was born in Oak Park, IL on August 29, 1923, to Ernest and Irene (Routzahn) Irish. She met her future husband, Robert G. Loftus, on a blind date while studying at the University of Iowa. Robert was stationed in Iowa City as a cadet aviation officer in the United States Navy. They were married on May 5, 1945, in Elmhurst, IL and returned immediately to his post in Memphis, TN. Upon his discharge, they returned to his family’s farm in Niantic, IL where their first child, Kathy, was born. They spent several years on a farm near Maroa, IL where their second child, Bob, was born. Tim, her third child was born in Decatur, IL, where they lived for one year. They relocated to Florissant, MO where they lived from 1957 to 1993. Robert and Jean moved to Ellisville, MO in 1993. In the summer of 2014, they moved to John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit, MO.

Jean was a homemaker who loved to quilt, knit, and bake. She volunteered with the St. Angela Merici Parent Club, serving on the uniform and hot lunch committees. She was a member of the school board of Rosary High School. She served in the St. Louis Peregrine Society, assembling bandages and other supplies for cancer patients. She joined a group of close friends who enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She was a gracious hostess and loved to cook for her family and friends. Almost as soon as a meal was over, she would be getting out snack food to share. Jean traveled extensively, including Canada, Guam, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Hong Kong, Ireland, England, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Scandinavia, Russia, Mexico, and all over the United States. She loved to play the nickel slot machines at the casino. She had a large collection of teddy bears who have been lovingly adopted by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent many wonderful days entertaining her family and loved to take her grandchildren to the park, the St. Louis Arch, the St. Louis Zoo, and the Lake of the Ozarks. Jean and her husband rented an apartment for months at a time to spend more time with grandchildren who lived on the West Coast. More recently, she loved to entertain her great-grandchildren.

Jean is survived by her husband Robert and her children Kathy in Missouri, Bob (Kim) in California, and Tim (Denise) in California. Grandchildren include Jennifer (Todd Krueger) Howe, John (Carrie) Howe, Julie (Jason) How, Kyle (Brittany) Loftus, Andrew (Erin) Loftus, Ian Loftus, and Dominique Loftus. She is also survived by her siblings Robert in Colorado, Marilyn (John) in California, and Doug in Arizona and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be missed by her good friend, Peggy Cline. For the past three years she was lovingly cared for by the nurses and staff at John Knox Village and Village Hospice.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Mildred Irish; her brother-in-law, Joe Loftus; her sisters-in-law, Kay Loftus, Toby Irish, and Carolyn Irish; and her son-in-law, John Howe.
