Jean Pells Fitton was born in Rhinebeck, NY, August 14, 1922, the daughter of Willis and Marion (Hamilton) Pells. After completing Rhinebeck High School in 1939, she attended Oberlin College, graduating in the spring of 1943 with a degree in English Literature. Upon graduation, she was employed as a passenger agent for United Airlines with assignments at Salt Lake City and Cleveland until 1945. On March 19, 1945, she married her college sweetheart, Cyrus Fitton of Hamilton, Ohio, who was a Naval Aviator serving in the Pacific Fleet. During her husband's 30-year naval career, Jean established homes in 17 different locations around the country and once in Naples, Italy. She raised four children, frequently moving them across the U.S. while her husband was at sea. In short, she was considered to be a competent and model navy wife and mother.
Upon Cy's retirement in 1972, the family moved to Carmel, CA. She became an enthusiastic volunteer with the Monterey Bay Aquarium. She signed on as a docent in the first class held and served for 20 years. She enjoyed playing bridge and golf, and planning family reunions at exotic locations. She was a creative entertainer and gifted cook and hostess. She was also an avid gardener and loved tide-pooling with her children and grandchildren at Point Lobos. Jean and her husband flew their single-engine Cessna around the U.S. during the summer for 16 years visiting relatives and friends. They greatly enjoyed 12 cruises with family members over their 72 years of marriage.
Jean and Cy have four children - Lawrence (Nancy) Fitton, Marcia Fitton, Sarah (John) Feuerstein, and Cyrus Andrew (Ronda) Fitton, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Louis Pells. In her 94 years, she was much loved and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 11:30 a.m. at The Chapel by the Sea, 65 Asilomar Blvd. in Pacific Grove. Donations in honor of Jean can be sent to Monterey Bay Aquarium, Attn: Development Department, 886 Cannery Row, Monterey, CA 93940 with "in memory of Jean Fitton" on the check memo line or by calling 831-648-4923.
