Death is a joyful messenger of peace whose kind hand opens to the weary pilgrims the gates of immortality and lets the oppressed go free. A beautiful and glorious life came to a close when Jene James Williams was called to join the innumerable caravan where each shall take his chambers in the silent halls of death.

Jene James Williams was born August 23, 1932, in Lauderdale, Mississippi, to Reverend Pete and Mrs. Blanche Leggett Williams (both deceased). His early childhood was spent in Mississippi where he attended local schools.

In 1944, the family moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he graduated from Stanton Senior High School. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in West Union Baptist Church under the shepherdship of Reverend William Cummings. After high school he joined the United States Air Force where he served admirably for twenty-three years and was stationed in many locations. During his early tenure in the Air Force, he met and married Doris Martin. To this union four children were born.

In later years, Jene relocated to Tampa, Florida. There he worked at the Veterans Hospital for a number of years and was a diligent and dedicated employee. After settling in Tampa, he met and married Shirley Hunter and gained three children in this union. Being true to the purpose of family and believing in God’s Word, Jene and Shirley adopted two children to whom they provided a loving and Christian home.

Jene and Shirley were very active in church and later united with Lake Carroll Baptist Church where they continued their spiritual walk. As active members and allowing their light to shine, they left lasting memories and much appreciation for their dedication. In 2015, Jene was ordained Deacon in his church. He was also very active as a Gideon spreading God’s Word wherever he went.

After a short hospital stay, this dedicated servant of God passed from this life April 17, 2017.

Jene was predeceased by two children, Claire Bernadette and Kenneth Elliott and ten siblings: Otis Williams, John B. Williams, Albert Lee Williams, Solomon W. Williams, Alvin P. Williams, Susie J. Cole, Viola Smothers, Annie B. Kendrick, Mary E. Davis and Amelia F. Robinson.

He leaves to mourn his passing: Beloved daughters, Sebra W. Ferrell (Jose), April S. Williams and Selena T. Williams; devoted son, Jene A. Williams; step-children, Carmen L. Williams (Albert), Desiree' R. Hills, and David A. Hills; sisters, Juanita W. Taylor and Norweida Maxwell; 13 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, numerous cousins and devoted friends.

Asleep in Jesus

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.

1 Thessalonians 4: 13-14
