Jerome "Jerry" Hampel, 84, passed away July 7, 2016 at Betz Nursing Home. He was born March 26, 1932 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Mary and Oscar Hampel. He joined the Army in 1949 and served with distinction with the 4th Company Airborne Rangers and the 187th ARCT in the Korean War from 1950 until 1952 earning a Purple Heart for wounds in combat. He returned to Elkhart in 1952 and earned his GED from Elkhart High School. He then started his career at Adams & Westlake in Elkhart and New York City where he was in sales, covering the east coast. He then moved his family back to his hometown of Elkhart, and continued his career with them until moving into the manufactured house market with Richardson Homes, where he became a Plant and Sales Manager. He started Squire Homes in Constantine, Michigan in 1975 with another partner and they continued through the '70s. Jerry then started RoyalKan and was successful in the waste management business, selling and manufacturing steel refuse containers. He continued working for Ben Davis Chevrolet in Auburn until his retirement. Surviving are his wife, Jean Hampel; daughter, Kathy Sears; son, James (Sue Ann) Hampel; grandchildren, A. J. Sears, Sarah Hampel and Amy Hampel; brother, Paul (Marilyn) Hampel; and sister, Rita (Richard) Munzenmaier. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jane (Bill) Mann. Memorial service will be Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at 1 PM at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 6750 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46804 with visitation one hour prior. Inurnment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Preferred memorials are to the Wounded Warrior Project.
