A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Collier-Butler Funeral Parlor for Jerrie J. Gast, 75, of Gadsden who passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017. Cremation Services provided by Collier-Butler Funeral Home.
Jerrie was born in 1942 in Tuscaloosa but spent her early childhood in Gadsden. Her family moved to Michigan in the 1950's. She was a graduate of Waterford Township High School. In 1964 she received a degree in art from Michigan State University after her marriage to Carl Gast. She spent most of her life in Midland, Texas and in Houston, Texas where Carl worked in engineering management for Shell Pipeline and she taught art. Jerrie was a great lover of animals, but art had been her passion since childhood. She always said that art was "her work, her leisure and her fun."
After retirement she devoted all her energy to painting. While in Houston she was a member of several galleries. She was past president of Wash (watercolor, art, society, Houston).
After returning to Gadsden a few years ago, she became a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, the Gadsden Museum of Art and the Gadsden Woman's Club.
Jerrie was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Gast, II; parents, Auby and Jimmie Turner; uncle, Paul Baker; nephew, Mike Durette; grandparents, Guy and Nila Baker and Harvey and Fannie Turner.
Survivors include her son, Carl Gast, III; daughter, Christy (Blair) Fesler; granddaughter, Hannah Fesler; sister, Nita (Mike) Simmons; aunts, Nancy (Jerry) Hall and Carolyn Gast; nephews, Steve Durrett and Dusty Durrett; niece, Jennifer Thomas; great niece, Nicole Arnold; cousins, Randy Kelley, Nila Nabors, Jonathan Prickett, Paula Dodd, Susie Walker, Renee Chambers, Judy Vansandt, Lisa Baker, Phillip Baker, Craig Baker, Carolyn Baker, Glenda Atchley, Janie Cleveland, Joann Kirby, Roger Dale, Danny Dale, Sandra Lasseter, Lullene Rary, Geraldine Miner, Vivan Powell, Billy Turner, Lisa Baker and a host of 2nd and 3rd cousins.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Amedysis; Amy Tawbush, Cheryl Geier and Vivian Maddox Smith.
