Mr. Jerry Donald McKinney, 84, of Drexel, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Autumn Care of Drexel, following a period of declining health.
Jerry was born on December 18, 1933 in Mitchell County to the late Lawrence McKinney and Grace Collis McKinney. He was an active member of the Morganton First Church of God and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Morganton after 35 years of service. Jerry was also a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1954-1956. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Guy McKinney and one sister, Mildred Guthrie.
Survivors include his loving wife, Velair Daniels McKinney of the home, a daughter, Teresa Fender and husband Dale of Drexel, two sons, David McKinney of Hickory and Matthew McKinney of Morganton, two brothers, Robert McKinney and wife Sandra of Marion and Ralph McKinney and wife Joyce of Utah and three sisters, Nina Bowman of Marion, Evelyn Sexton of Marion and Nancy Hicks and husband Johnny of South Carolina. Also surviving are his grandchildren; Brandon Fender and wife Stacy of Valdese, Julie Storie and husband Bobby of Drexel, Joshua McKinney and wife Christine of Forest City, and Emily Fender of Drexel, great-grandsons, Camden and Parker Fender of Valdese and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at the Morganton First Church of God with Rev. Jon McDivitt officiating. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the U.S. Army National Guard.
The family will receive friends on Friday, from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.
