Jessie Lee Hayes Monroe affectionately known as "DeeDee"- passed gently into eternity late on Tuesday night, April 10, 2018, at the age of 102. Jessie was predeceased by her father and mother Robert and Jeneria Hayes and siblings,Whitfield and Fulton (Betty) Hayes, and Francis Covington. She was also predeceased by her husband Jesse Richard Monroe, who passed in March 1982. .

Jessie was born January 13, 1916, and reared in rural farmland between Clinton and Ingold, NC, and, at an early age, gave her life to Christ at Lisbon Street Baptist Church (Clinton, NC). After marrying Jesse Richard and moving to Delway, NC the neighborhood colloquially known as Hayestown, she joined H ayes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. At Hayes, she served diligently singing in the senior choir and serving with the Daughters of Zion, as Hayes Chapel's secretary and unofficially as one of the "mothers of the church" in her latter years.

Jessie's life was intimately intertwined with that of her niece, Gloria Hayes- Francis' daughter. Jessie and her husband Jesse Richard foster-parented Gloria as their own after the death of her mother. Many years upon the death of her husband, Jessie and Gloria combined their individual households.

Gloria remarried her husband Theodore Johnson years later and relocated to Gaithersburg, MD, from Delway, NC. Jessie lived alone for a short period of time before eventually relocating to Gaithersburg to live with Theodore and Gloria-where all three became members of the Interdenominational Church of God (!COG). Jessie attended ICOG and maintained her relationship with her ICOG and Hayes Chapel families until her passing. At the tender young age of 99, Jessie was moved to be baptized (again); so, she was re-baptized under the leadership of Pastor Pumphrey.

Like many people, Jessie's nickname "DeeDee"- was a family nickname bestowed upon her absent any logic. Gloria and Theodore's first born, Sharon Atterbury nee Johnson, in her infancy began calling Jessie "DeeDee." Why? No one knows. Sharon's younger siblings Angerlia and Reginald mimicked Sharon in calling Jessie "DeeDee." Theodore diligently stressed for a time that the children call her "Aunt Jessie" vice "DeeDee" but to no avail. The nickname "DeeDee" stuck and its usage spread outside the family.

As many can attest, Jessie was a great cook and baker of cakes and pies. Along with cooking, her hobbies included gardening, quilting, watching religious TV programs, studying the Bible, reading the newspaper and solving word search puzzles.

Jessie leaves 4 generations of family to mourn her: first generation includes niece Gloria (Theodore) John son; second generation includes great-nieces and nephews-Sharon Atterbury, Angerlia Johnson, Reginald (Sheila) Johnson, Jowain Williams and Theeon Johnson, all of MD, Todd Woodward of Miami, FL, and Keith Woodward of Raleigh, NC; third generation includes special great-great-niece and nephew- Alexandria Atterbury and Jowain Williams Jr. of MD; and fourth generation includes great-great-great-nephews Alexandria's sons Venice Chandler and Yariel Vazquez. She also leaves to mourn extended family near and far, friends and her Hayes Chapel and ICOG families.
