Joan Hill died October 29, 2017, at the age of 88, surrounded by her family. She was born June 12, 1929 in Missouri, but shortly thereafter, moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma and was an avid Sooner football fan, never missing a televised game. In 1951, Joan married the love of her life, Robert D. Hill. In 1960, after having lived in several cities throughout Texas while their family grew, they settled in Phoenix. Ten years later, the family of six relocated to Wellesley, MA, where they had an opportunity to enjoy the East Coast. Two years later, missing the Arizona desert, they moved back to Phoenix and never left.
At the age of 50, after the unexpected death of her husband, Joan began an independent life, devoted to helping others. She volunteered at ICM, participated in various church activities, tutored at a local grade school, and worked in the Heard Museum gift shop, to name just a few. She was also actively involved with bridge groups, book clubs, and lunch with friends of all ages. Despite her busy schedule, Joan's family remained the focal point of her life as her four children and thirteen grandchildren can attest.
She is survived by her children, Jennifer Sprague (Tim), Jane Santora (Steve), John Hill (Beth) and David Hill (Rhonda); her beloved grandchildren, Shannon (Joe), Kelsey (Jonathan), Katie (Christian), Sam (Nicole), Tony (Rachel), JD (Adrienne), Joey, Bob, Grace, Erin, Maggie, Hayley, and John; and her cherished great-granddaughters, Libby, Addie, and Sophia. She is also survived by many relatives and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Services will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Phoenix on Saturday, November 4, at 9:30 a.m., Father Poulson Reed officiating. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made in Joan Hill's name to Interfaith Cooperative Ministries (ICM), icmaz.org, or to a favorite charity close to your heart in her honor.
