Born in Wilmington, N.C. on November 19, 1934, she was married to William Sewell Burton for 61 years until her death on Nov. 23, 2016.

She attended The Univ. of GA., Atlanta Div. and had a rewarding career as a Kindergarten Director where her skills were revered by children, parents and co-workers alike. After retiring from teaching, she enjoyed eighteen years of house boating with friends and family on Lake Lanier.

She was an exceptional seamstress, an insatiable reader and an avid boater.

Her extensive creative talents included writing poetry for children, painting, designing, smocking and sewing.

Joan's happiest days were when teaching and directing a child’s garden (Joan’s idea of kindergarten); and spending time with her beloved grandsons, Steven and William Marinos.

She is survived by her devoted husband and three children: Lisa Burton Marinos of Memphis, William Sewell Burton, Jr. of Atlanta and Richard Grant Burton of Athens.
