For Joan L. (Laraway) Dunlap, life's journey came to its end surrounded by her loving family, in the comforting care of the community at Summerhill in Peterborough, NH on Tuesday, February 21, 2017.

Throughout life, Joan collected mementos from her many travels and experiences. She was born January 8, 1934, in Antrim, NH, the daughter of George and Nellie (French) Cummings. The family lived on the Highland Farm where George was employed for forty-seven years as the general manager. Joan learned the value of a hard day's work and devotion to family. Dedication was something she took very seriously: she graduated in 1952 from Antrim High School as Valedictorian. As she grew into a young woman, the characteristics of compassion and devotion blossomed.

On June 27, 1953, Joan married Marvin S. Laraway. Together they had three children, Steven, Deborah, and Barry. For many years she worked for Health and Human Services in Keene and also for Cheshire Medical Center and Markem. She brought compassion and understanding to those she had the opportunity to work with and serve in her community. The family spent many weekends and holidays enjoying their camp near Goose Pond in West Canaan, NH.

Joan loved to be with her family and to provide for them: knitting and sewing were two of her favorite pastimes and it gave her opportunities to share her creations with family. She also loved to cook and bake. Some of the family's favorites included chicken wings, chocolate chip cookies, baked beans, and her special chocolate pudding cake. The holidays were always a special time in her home and being able to provide a memorable time for those she loved was her passion.

Joan had a special place in her heart for nature: both plants and animals. She would spend hours working with her flowers making sure they showed their beauty to their fullest. She took great joy in feeding the birds, especially cardinals, and deer in her yard. She so enjoyed watching the deer grow and play on the back lawn.

On July 14, 2001, Joan began the second chapter in her life by marrying Donald A. Dunlap. The two built a beautiful home in Marlow together and spent much of their time making wonderful memories and adding to their collection of mementos. They enjoyed trips to Maine where they would, of course, have lobster.

Part of the joy of collecting mementos is being able to share them with those we love. Joan's loved ones include her husband, Donald A. Dunlap of Peterborough, her sons, Steven Laraway and wife June of Meridian, Idaho, Barry Laraway and fiancé Jeannette Boucakis of Canaan, NH, daughter Deborah Chambers and husband Robert of Swanzey, NH, seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and extended family members. She is predeceased by her first husband, Marvin S. Laraway.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, February 27, 2017 at 11am, in the Monadnock View Cemetery, Park Ave, Keene, NH. Family and friends are invited to call on the family from 2 to 4pm on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, NH.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Mass. & New Hampshire Chapter, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA. 02472
