Joan Sarah Bernstein Schauer - much loved wife, mother and grandmother - died on Saturday, April 8th. She was surrounded by Stan, Laura and Donna in her apartment in Boulder. Although exact cause of death is not clear, she was declining from Parkinson's disease and more recently, lung cancer.

Joan was born in the Bronx, New York on December 17, 1926, the only child of Anna and Harry Bernstein. She met her husband when she was about 14 years old, and after many engagements to other men, chose Stanley when he returned from the army in World War II. This has been a long-time family story, mostly told by Stan.

Joan worked at several jobs including secretary and office manager, clothing buyer and most recently, real estate broker. But her true career - one that she did for over 45 years - was as the nightclub manager of the large and popular Catskill mountain resort, Kutsher's Country Club. Along with her husband, who worked summers and weekends as the director of activities and tennis pro, Joan mingled with famous entertainers and renown sports figures. Some people have suggested that Kutsher's was the influence behind the popular movie, Dirty Dancing.

After Stan retired, they moved from New York City to Florida, where they owned their first home. Joan loved every minute of her time there - particularly swimming and gambling. She created beautiful pottery and glass art, and her work decorates many people's homes. She was a very strong and determined woman who, despite many surgeries and medical problems, continued to maintain her independence. In Florida she was with most of her life-long friends, who adored her.

Joan intensely loved her daughters, Laura Uhls and Donna Kruger, her husband Stanley, her grandchildren Anna, Alex, Grace Uhls and Elizabeth, Michael, Caroline Kruger, her sons-in-law Jeff Uhls and Irving Kruger, many many close friends in Florida and New York, and her recent aide and confidant, Andrea DesLauriers.

There is no service scheduled at this time, however notification of a memorial will be sent out in the near future. People inquiring about donations can send them to Stanley (JUST KIDDING), to the Parkinson's Foundation or to the charity of their choice.
