Joan Williams Strand died at the age of 81. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 26, 1936. She moved to Scarsdale, New York in the late forties and graduated from Scarsdale High School in 1954. She received a B.S. degree from Cornell University in 1958 and a Master of Science from Cornell in 1960. After working for a magazine in New York City for a while, she married Roger Gordon Strand of Tarrytown, New York, and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1961. Most of Joan's life was spent doing volunteer work for community projects in which she believed - The Phoenix Art Museum (League and Docents), The Junior League, Family Arts Exchange, Ninety-Nines and Recording for the Blind. Joan and Roger loved to fly, and after earning Private and Commercial Pilot's licenses, they earned Instrument Ratings and flew their Cessna 172 all over the country. Joan was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and Omicron Nu Honor Society. Joan is survived by her sister, Betty B. Bender, of Naperville, IL and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church January 24th at 11 a.m. and will be followed by a reception at the church.
