Joann Hester, of Greenwood, Virginia, born May 11, 1941, daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Elva Ruth Shiflett, rests in eternal slumber as of Saturday, February 25, 2017.

She is survived by her children, Barbara (David) Rhodes, Deborah Crittenden, Glenn Hester, and Linda Vincent. She is also survived by her grandchildren, whom she loved so much, Tiffany (Matt) Taylor, Tyler Rhodes, André Walker, Nicholas Walker, Randall Crittenden, Michael Vincent, Gabriel Vincent, Cadence Hester, and Connor Hester. In addition, she leaves behind her two cherished great grandchildren, Lucian Taylor and Virginia Pearl Taylor. Lastly, she is survived by two brothers, one sister, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents’, her death was preceded by two of her brothers’.

Joann retired, after forty-five years, from Morton’s/Conagra Frozen Foods in Crozet, Virginia. She loved to work in her yard and nurture her potted plants and flowers indoors and out. On most days she could be seen pulling weeds or picking up sticks and leaves outside, and on rainy days she would sit on her deck, enjoying the fresh air. She loved the simple pleasures of life: taking long drives to appreciate the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley’s rolling hills and mountains, or driving down the scenic country roads of Albemarle County, with its green pastures and views from those roads of sunsets along the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Her family will be forever grateful for the kindness of Joann’s neighbors, Nelson and the late Betty Raines, who helped her tremendously over the years. They were always there for her, and she immeasurably enjoyed the conversations she and Betty had before Betty’s health declined.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 3, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Teague Funeral Home in Charlottesville. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.
