John was born on April 23, 1932 and passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2019.

John was a resident of Nashville, Tennessee at the time of passing.

Oates earned a BS from Wake Forest Univ., 1953, and an MD from Bowman Gray (now Wake Forest) School of Medicine 1956.

Oates earned a BS from Wake Forest Univ., 1953, and an MD from Bowman Gray (now Wake Forest) School of Medicine 1956. Services will be held at 3pm Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3900 West End Avenue, Nashville TN 37205.

One of his major contributions to pharmacology was discovering the antihypertensive effect of methyldopa/Aldomet. His breakthrough work on the drug came when he decided to test if it would help patients with malignant hypertension.
