John Allen Phillips, Sr. went home to his Heavenly Father on April 18, 2017. Born in Ehren, Florida, on September 18, 1927, John was the youngest of 4 children. Losing his father at the age of 2, John and his family were very poor with earthly possessions, but his mother was a devoted Christian woman and raised her children to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. John loved his mother with every fiber of his being and credited her with telling him, “Son, education will get you out of all this.”

John attended two colleges while in the Navy and earned his bachelor’s degrees in accounting and business management from the University of Florida in 1949. His two children and oldest granddaughter also became Florida Gators as will his oldest great-granddaughter. He was an accountant for 18 years before embarking on other business adventures, to include construction. For many years John was an active member of the Tampa Power Squadron teaching many of their boating courses and serving as its commander in 1962. John was also very proud of his membership in the Tampa Bay Freewheelers biking club even though he suffered 2 broken hips from careless drivers in the years he participated. For many years on his birthdays he rode the corresponding number of miles to celebrate. He and Mary Ann also enjoyed their Forrester’s Club for over 30 years. Above all though, family was the most important part of his life.

John was preceded in death by Dottie, his first wife and mother of his children, and his 3 siblings Etha, Bill, and Florence. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years Maria Anna (Mary Ann), his daughter Mary (Mike), son John Jr. (Carol), stepsons John Pendino (Tracey)and Philip Randall, sister-in-law Stella Phillips, brother-in-law Peter V. Filippello (Teresa), sister-in-law Frances Latteri, sister-in-law Rosalie Borucki (Ron), 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Blount & Curry Terrace Oaks Chapel, 12690 N. 56th St., Temple Terrace at 11:00 A.M. Family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service.
