John Conrad Henry Raphael, age 88, passed away October 26, 2017 in Syracuse, Utah. He was born March 30, 1929 in Winona, Minnesota to Julius Gottlieb and Margaretha Monska Raphael. He attended schools in Minnesota, Brigham Young University and University of Utah where he studied music and engineering. He married Helen Marie Gilbert October 23, 1957. They just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
John loved music and was able to play many instruments by ear. He had a beautiful tenor voice and sang in operas semi-professionally.
He worked in the aerospace and pharmaceutical industries. His employment took his family all over the country including Colorado, Washington, Kentucky, Georgia and California with many years being spent in northern California before moving to Utah his last few years.
He joined the army in 1955 where he met his sweetheart, Helen, while she was visiting and he was serving in Germany.
John spent many hours in the kitchen devising some fabulous or interesting dishes. His unconventional personality and sense of humor came through in many of his endeavors right up until the end.
He served in many LDS church callings and will be remembered for his compassion and dedication while serving as a bishop in the Vacaville Ward in California.
He enjoyed genealogy and family history and was proud of his German heritage. He was known for keeping friends and family close through letters, emails, visits, phone calls and reunions.
John loved his family and sacrificed a lot for them. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, and his children Mike(Kelli) Raphael, Curtis(Debi) Raphael, Marlin(Jodi) Raphael, Phil(Theresa) Raphael, Susan(Tom) Garner and Steve Raphael, a sister, Elizabeth Putz, 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Louise, Anna, Willie and Carl and by his children Keith and Jim.
To honor John's memory, go out of your way to do a good deed or do something to make someone smile.
We would like to thank those at the VA Hospital and Brighton Hospice for their excellent care of John over the last few years and weeks.
