John Downie, age 66 years of Plymouth, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017 at his home peacefully following a lengthy illness with his family by his side. He was the spouse of William Washburn, and the son of the late John and Barbara (Spiers) Downie. Born and raised in Somerville, he was a graduate of Somerville High School, class of 1969. He has lived in Plymouth for over 35 years. He loved working around his home and yard helping to keep both in impeccable condition. He loved to travel, and wintered at his home in California. John worked for the MBTA for 23 years and he retired as a foreman in 2011. Following his retirement he was the owner and operator of the Cardsmart gift shop in West Plymouth. John was a loving, caring, selfless, strong, proud, and creative, handsome man. He was the best at problem solving and was always helping family and friends that were in need.  John was truly a special man. But above all he was a loving spouse, father, and grandfather.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.   Besides his loving spouse William, John is survived by his son John Downie and his wife Michelle of Merrimack, NH, his daughter Jennifer Sollitto and her husband Kevin of Medford, his grandchildren Sarah and Hailey Downie, Ashley and Ally Sollitto, his brothers William, Robert and Charles Downie, as well as, his two sisters, Carol Pratti and Elizabeth “Betty” Ganley, and his aunt, Beatrice Dalton.  He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. At John’s request, services will be private.
