The acclaimed British actor Sir John Gielgud, whose Hamlet was regarded as the finest of the 20th century, has died at the age of 96.

Gielgud died peacefully on Sunday at his home near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, west of London.

Gielgud was revered alongside his contemporaries Laurence Olivier and Ralph Richardson as one of Britain's finest actors of all time.
