COLUMBIA - A funeral service for John Joseph Harth, 85, will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Resurrection Lutheran Church, with burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.



Mr. Harth passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017. Born on July 17, 1931 in New York City, New York, he was a son of the late Albert J. Harth and Anne Comefort Harth.



John served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was a platoon sergeant (E7) and received the Silver Star, Purple Heart and Army Accommodation Medal while serving in Vietnam. He later retired from Southeastern Freight Lines after 40 years of service. John was a lifelong member of Resurrection Lutheran Church. He was a loving dad and grandpa. He loved attending church, his family, enjoyed going to Carolina Gamecock baseball games and enjoyed following NY Yankee baseball. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels.



Surviving are his sons, John F. Harth (Judi) of Lawrenceville, Ga., Michael R. Harth (Missie) of Chapin, and William A. Harth (Mildred) of Seneca; daughters, Gail H. Dabbs (Dale) of Walhalla, Christine A. Wash of Gaston, Gwendolyn M. McGee (Charlie) of Gaston, and Laurie Cooley (Robin) of Columbia; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and brothers, George Harth of Wantagh, Long Island, New York and Paul Harth of Louisiana.



In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Anna Von Uchtrup Harth.
