John Richard ("Dick") Houser of Mesa, Arizona passed away on January 15, 2018 at the age of 89. Born in Mesa on January 24, 1928 to Mary Frances (Love) and Clarence Neal Houser, Dick spent most of his childhood in Roosevelt Lake, Arizona where his father was employed by SRP. The family later moved to Phoenix where Dick attended North High and Phoenix College, later receiving his degree in Psychology from Arizona State College (now Arizona State University).

One of Dick's proudest accomplishments was his time with the United States Navy; he joined in 1945 and served on the U.S.S. Thompson (a minesweeper), traveling to China during the communist uprising. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Dick worked in the insurance industry for over five decades and was active in various civic organizations, including the Phoenix Jaycees, Phoenix College Alumni Association, and the Phoenix 4 Wheel Club. He was inducted into the Phoenix College Hall of Fame in 2009 and was a member of the Half-Century Club.

Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife Connie and two brothers, Robert and James. He is survived by his children Kay, Karl, Kurt, his grandchildren Melissa, April, Megan, Alexandra, Chase and his great-grandchildren Troy, Tyler, Ephrem, Madalyn, Amber, Carter, and Brooke. He is also survived by his sister Mary Franks and several nieces. Words cannot express how much Dick will be missed by all his family; he was truly a source of happiness and comfort for all those who knew him. Dick will be interred at the National Memorial Cemetery in Cave Creek, Arizona on February 2 at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Dick's name to Phoenix Community College.
