John Thomas Lipford passed away on July 31, 2017. John was born May 13, 1922 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late James T and Dorothy C. Lipford. John moved to Long Island, New York in 1933. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1943 with a
degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, John worked for General Motors and Columbia Aircraft. He proudly served his country as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy from 1944-1946. After completing his naval obligation, John joined Virginia Metal Products in Orange County Virginia. He moved to Greensboro in 1949 to set up a manufacturing plant for Modern Metal Products
Company eventually becoming company president in 1974. He is survived by his son James T. and wife Deborah J. Lipford of Winston Salem, daughter Jean L. Claud and husband Mark W. Claud of Richmond, Virginia, four grandchildren Richard (wife Danielle), Lauren (husband Justin), Elizabeth and Harrison and one great grandchild, Thomas. John is preceded in death by wife Marjorie, sisters Dorothy A. Thompson, Grace D. Lipford and brother Floyd K. Lipford. He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Rotary Club of Greensboro since 1955 being named as a Paul Harris Fellow.
