John T. Stewart of Pebble Beach passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 92 years of age. He was born in Westboro, MA on April 25, 1925. He attended public schools in Missouri and Ohio and served in the US Army during WWII, including time with the 75th Infantry Division in the European Theatre.

After the war, John attended Washington University in St. Louis on the GI Bill, receiving both his bachelor's and master's degrees. He met his wife, Jean Aderton (1926-2011), a student in the school of nursing at the university. They were wed June 16, 1949 and celebrated 62 years together.

John served as a teacher and school administrator in Missouri and Illinois. He joined CTB/McGraw-Hill in 1963 and in 1968 he transferred to the Monterey headquarters. He served as a senior product manager and was known for his ability to form trusting and devoted customer relationships. He retired in 1993, but continued to serve as a consultant to the company until 2003.

John held membership in a number of professional educational organizations including Phi Delta Kappa, the National Personnel and Guidance Association, and served a president 1984-85 of the National Association of Measurement in Counseling and Development.

John is survived by his son John T. Stewart III of Pebble Beach and his daughter Phyllis Stewart Pires and her husband Craig Pires of Mountain View, CA. They are the parents of John's pride and joy - his three grandchildren - Carolyn, Allison, and Philip Pires. The Stewart's oldest daughter Carolyn Stewart passed away in 1976 at the age of 23.

John and Jean were active members of the First Presbyterian Church of Monterey where John served as an elder and sang in the church choir. They were long-time patrons and supporters of the Monterey Symphony, John having served two terms as a member of the board of directors. They were also charter members of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where daughter Phyllis and her husband Craig held their wedding celebration. John was an active member of Sons in Retirement and served as president in 2003.

John was proud of his eleven-plus years of service to Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula and was famous for his lengthy visit to his shut-ins - delivering a cheerful conversation with the food. John never met anyone he couldn't engage in conversation and loved a good political debate.

A viewing will be on Monday, June 19th from 10:00 AM - Noon at The Paul Mortuary of Pacific Grove. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Monterey on Monday, June 19th at 3:00 p.m. The family would like to thank all of the loving caregivers and hospice for their tender care to the end. Memorial gifts may be made to Meals on Wheels, First Presbyterian Church or SPCA.
