Joseph Earl "Joe" Mahaffee , 88, of Valdese, passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018 at College Pines Nursing Center following a period of declining health.
Mr. Mahaffee was born March 3, 1929 in Rutherford County to the late Charles B. Mahaffee and Ethel Hutchins Mahaffee. He graduated from Valdese High School in 1948 and had many friends and classmates from that year. Before graduation, he entered the United States Navy at age 16 and served during the end of World War II. Following his graduation, he went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was owner and operator of Valdese Insurance Agency for over 40 years. Joe was a member of First United Methodist Church in Valdese since the early 1950's, where he was Treasurer for over 30 years.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and one nephew.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Joyce Ramsey Mahaffee of the home; one niece, Margaret Peyronel; a host of nieces and nephews of Joyce's family, Alan Griffin, Teresa Griffin, Lisa Griffin, Donald Cox, Donna Carpenter, Kim Lutz, GiGi Robinson, Monica Lofland, Jennifer Gilbert, Bobby Robinson, Jr.; and one god son, Lindy Hudson, Jr.
To honor Joe's wishes there will be no funeral service and no receiving of friends, only a reception of friends and family to reminisce.
The Reception will be held from 12:00-2:00 P.M. Wednesday January 10, 2018 in the social hall of First United Methodist Church in Valdese.
